Understanding Intune licensing and pricing

Reading time: 3 min(s)

Navigating the complexities of device management can be challenging for organizations of all sizes. Microsoft Intune offers tailored solutions to meet varying needs, whether you’re a small business or a large enterprise. By providing a flexible management experience, Intune simplifies the administration of devices, ensuring that organizations can efficiently manage their resources while enhancing security and compliance.

Overview of Microsoft Intune

Microsoft Intune is designed to support a broad range of customer requirements. Its management capabilities cater to educational institutions and small businesses, as well as enterprises requiring advanced features. Licensing plays a crucial role in accessing these functionalities, as the right plan can enhance operational efficiency and streamline device management.

Intune plans and licensing options

Microsoft offers several plans for Intune, catering to different needs. Here’s a breakdown of the available options:

  • Microsoft Intune Plan 1: This cloud-based unified endpoint management solution is part of several licensing options, including:
    • Microsoft 365 E5
    • Microsoft 365 E3
    • Enterprise Mobility + Security E5
    • Enterprise Mobility + Security E3
    • Microsoft 365 Business Premium
    • Microsoft 365 F1
    • Microsoft 365 F3
    • Microsoft 365 Government G5
    • Microsoft 365 Government G3

Licensing for co-management and additional features

For organizations transitioning from Configuration Manager-managed devices to Intune, co-management is facilitated through Windows 10 auto-enrollment. This feature requires licenses for both Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2 and Intune Plan 1. Notably, since December 1, 2019, individual Intune licenses are no longer necessary for this scenario, although the AADP1 licensing requirement remains in effect.

Device-only licensing

In addition to user-based licenses, Microsoft Intune provides device-only subscriptions. This option is ideal for managing single-use devices like kiosks and IoT devices that do not require user-specific management features. Device licenses can be purchased based on projected usage, and devices can be enrolled through various methods, including Windows Autopilot and the Apple Device Enrollment Program.

Limitations of Device-Only Licenses

While device-only licenses provide a streamlined way to manage devices, they come with certain limitations. For instance, features such as Intune app protection policies and conditional access are not supported under this licensing type. Additionally, user-based management features like email and calendar integration are unavailable.

Confirming your Intune license

For organizations starting with Microsoft Intune, a license is automatically created upon signing up for the free trial, which also includes an Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) subscription. To confirm your Microsoft Intune license, follow these steps:

  1. 1. Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
  2. 2. Navigate to Tenant administration Tenant status.
  3. 3. Under the Tenant details tab, you will see details about your MDM authority and total licenses.
  4. 4. Check your roles under Tenant administration Roles My permissions to verify your administrative permissions.

For those interested in checking their Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2 licenses, log in to the Azure portal and view the license information under the Microsoft Entra ID section.
